Design Objectives

Slumber identifies that adults 18-35 are the people who deal with immense stress from school and/or work, which ultimately affects their health and well-being. Studies show that good sleep habits is vital to our physical health and emotional well-being. We want our clients to connect their mobile devices and allow us to monitor their day-to-day activities to insure and to improve their sleep quality and quantity.

Design Challenge

People all have different lifestyles, habits, and health conditions. How is this app able to help users realize that their sleep is impacted by multiple factors

Pain Points

Pain Points are based off the diverse individuals deals with restlessness—

1. How many hours of sleep is the user receiving
Depending on the age of the user, the recommended hours of sleep vary from a range of 7-10 hours. According a study conducted by the National Institutes of Health, the average adult sleeps less than 7 hours per night. This may sound adequate when considering the user's daily tasks and errands, but this could also affect user's health in the future. Having a sleep tracker allows users to ensure their sleep schedule is in line, and it will keep the user organize on a routine based system.

2. The 4 sleep stages that occur while you sleep
The 4 sleep stages include REM (Rapid eye movement), light sleep, deep sleep, and awake. Each stage is essential in replenishing and restoring the physical and mental wellbeing of any living being. While REM and light sleep focuses more on the mental state, deep sleep is the most important. Deep sleep focuses on the physical wellbeing, the growth and recovery of the human body. Users should always ensure they receive a decent amount of sleep, this will increase the chances of a longer deep sleep cycle. Based on the heart rate of the users, the app can determine the time and duration of each sleep stage in which the user is in throughout their slumber.

3. How does lifestyle choices and habits impact the user's sleep
An imbalance diet and intensive day-to-day activities can be contributing factors that affect our sleep. When people partake in one or many of these factors, it can trigger stress or lengthen the awakening time from when we are normally  sleeping. Having a page that allows users to input their lifestyle choices can act as a daily log that can foreshadow any upcoming sleep problems for the users. This page will also provide recommendations to adjust user lifestyle to improve their sleep.

4. How can I translate my concerns to a medical professional
For users with constant sleep deprivation, sleep apnea, or any other medical sleep diagnosis, it is important to seek medical attention to ensure the issue is not prolonged and can be resolved immediately for relief and to reduce any potential sickness associated with poor sleep. Some people may live on a tight schedule, where seeking medical attention may be a difficult. Having an online platform with verified professionals will allow users to share information with the professional, and receive helpful advice.

Solution

Slumber is an app that will monitor the users sleep and day-to-day activities. Any factors that affect the users sleep, like snoring and stress, will be additional functions within the app. Each night Slumber will collect data which will then be translated into an infographic to visually display the results to the user in a days view, and in a weeks view. For lifestyle choices that can potentially affect the user's sleep, there will be an additional page to input these factors. All data collected, will be produced in a report format that can be shared to a Slumber medical professional, or shared with the user's designated physician.

Phase 1: Research Analysis

Research

In order to produce a product right for the user, a competitive analysis of similar products on the market must be considered, researched and analyzed. This unveils features that are great about the competitors product, as well as the flaws that can be improved, to better the user's experience. To get a better understanding of who the user is and what the user are doing a PACT analysis can give us a better insight in identifying them. Once the user is identified, user personas are formalized as a guideline to identify potential clients, and scenarios that arise from what they are looking to accomplish.

Phase 2: Ideation

Ideation

Based on the information received from the research process, ideation is formulated to determine the potential user tasks and scenarios that I want the app to cover. In this stage, iterations of the userflows visual design, site map and wireframes are developed to establish the device, the functions we want incorporated, as well as how the overall product and app will operate and respond through every button pressed and every screen the user approaches.

Visual Design

The branding and UI across Slumber makes use of the font SF Pro, using different weights for titles, subtitles, and body copy. Eight colours form
the primary palette for the UI, with orange being the accent colour on top of a dark blue gradient.

Slumber Application

The Slumber app requires an account to be made as the app handles personal information. Users have a choice to create an account with their email, or connect their existing Facebook and Google account. The app can be accessed on any mobile, tablet, watch, or computer device. To detect sleep activity, the app can collect data through the user's mobile device and smart watch. For the mobile device, the app uses the phone's accelerometer or sonar waves to detect movement. Once the device is placed on the user's mattress, Slumber on your mobile device will be able to detect these movements. Slumber on the user's smart watch uses the heart rate detection to collect and record sleep data. Based on the beats per minute (bpm), the app can determine which stage of sleep the user is in at the moment. This app is focused on data collection as well as providing the user with effective feedback and resolutions. Anything that pertains or affects the user's sleep quality and quantity like snoring and stress, will be additional sections on the app that will be considered alongside the user's sleep results.

Userflows

After creating an account or logging in, users will be prompted to a dashboard, which provides the users with an overall average of their sleep results. The data collected are sleep (which includes the time and sleep stages), snoring, heartbeat, stress, and screen time. The data collected from these categories are all potential reasons why the user's sleep quality and quantity are being affected. For users to view past data, they are able to review that information under the trends page, which allows user to filter results by day and by week. Users are also able to input information based on their lifestyle choices, like caffeine and alcohol consumption, which can also impact the user's sleep. After the user receives their results, they are able to share this information with Slumber's in app sleep professionals, or they can share a digital report with their physician.
